About the role

The Director of Mind Cymru is a member of the Mind Executive Team and shares responsibility for the corporate leadership, delivery and development of the charity. The post is responsible for the development and delivery of Mind’s work in Wales, and leads work with external stakeholders in Wales. They will manage relationships with Directors and Heads elsewhere in Mind to ensure the delivery of the agreed service from other Mind departments, and to ensure a strong Wales contribution to the work of those departments. They will be responsible for ensuring a close and supportive working relationship with local Minds in Wales as well as with the Chair of the One Mind in Wales network and Chair of Pwyllgor Cymru.

 

The post holder will have a significant level of responsibility and autonomy in a senior leadership role and will be expected to uphold the highest standards of leadership and collegiate working. It is expected for the post holder to spend their time as follows:

  • About 3 days a week in Cardiff, given this is the seat of national Government and national media, and is where the Mind national centre is located
  • At least 1 day a week in the Wales network, working with & supporting local Minds
  • Upto 1 day a week in Stratford, contributing to corporate leadership of the charity (as MET member) and ensuring that Wales issues are well reflected in the work of the charity as a whole.

The delivery of this will respect Welsh Govt guidelines re Home Working.

Key Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Mind Executive Team to make informed decisions on a wide range of policy and strategy matters which influence the effectiveness of the organization. At all times, to provide exemplary corporate and team based leadership and model collegiate ways of working, fostering a culture of co-operation, flexibility and adaptability.
  • To maintain an overview of changes in the operating environment in Wales, and to ensure that these are reflected in the ongoing development and delivery of Mind’s strategy in Wales.
  • To have responsibility for the development and implementation of Mind’s strategy in Wales, achieving all milestones and ensuring high levels of organizational performance. This includes planning and organizing the charity’s national work in Wales and taking overall accountability for Mind’s performance across Wales.
  • To provide strategic direction and leadership, including work with the Welsh Assembly Government, Local Health Boards, strategic networks, collaborations with other national organisations, and academics in mental health and related fields in order to influence mental health policy and legislation.
  • To proactively identify, manage and deliver synergies across the organization and its partners to maximize our impact.
  • To take overall responsibility, in liaison with the Director of Networks and Communities, for the establishment of a supportive working relationship with local Minds in Wales, and to actively enable the development of local Minds and the Mind network in Wales.
  • To provide leadership to the Local Mind network in Wales and governance functions with Pwyllgor Cymru, in liaison with the Chairs of each group.
  • To ensure, in liaison with the Director of External Relations, the representation of, and to work to achieve the adoption of in Wales, Mind’s current and future policies on mental health
  • To lead on communications and be the senior ambassador, spokesperson and representative of Mind as required at events and in the media, both in Wales and more broadly.
  • To ensure that intelligence is gathered nationally & locally, and relayed from Wales to inform and influence Mind’s mental health policies and campaign development across the charity as a whole.
  • To promote good practice in mental health services through policy and campaigning work, through work with the Local Mind network, and through Mind Cymru’s direct national delivery work.
  • To lead Mind’s negotiations in matters of policy, funding and service provision with governmental bodies including Welsh Government and Public Health Wales, as well as with key non governmental/commercial organisations.
  • To ensure, in liaison with the Director Mind Retail, the development & potential expansion of Mind’s retail work in Wales, including strengthened joint working between Mind, local Minds and Mind Retail in Wales
  • To take overall responsibility, in liaison with Director of Fundraising, for the establishment and delivery of a pipeline of new fundraising and contracting opportunities in Wales, for both national and Local Mind work in Wales.
  • To ensure Mind operates within the agreed resource allocation for work in Wales
  • To ensure Mind in Wales provides excellent customer services internally and externally, championing the highest levels of customer care, where necessary, develop and embed high standards of customer care and responsiveness. To be a champion for Quality in all aspects of Mind’s work in Wales.
  • To prepare papers, reports and presentations for internal and external meetings including senior management meetings, Mind Executive Team and trustee committee meetings. To attend and contribute to meetings, briefings, reviews, due diligence, auditing and compliance activities
  • To undertake other duties that may be necessary in compatible with the nature of this post and to be flexible in undertaking the role.

  • Oversee the operational management of Mind Cymru
  • Keep abreast of internal and external developments and respond accordingly.
  • To attend and contribute to supervision and appraisal process, meetings, training, and other events as required.
  • To adhere to relevant legal and statutory requirements including the Data Protection Act (ensuring an appropriate level of confidentiality at all times), Health and Safety at Work Act (ensuring H&S of own and others at all times) and any other relevant/charity law.
