Role Description - Chief Executive Officer

Salary: £94,000 (with optional pension scheme after completion of 3 months service)

Location: UK wide (with the expectation of working from the London office at least twice a week and when required for the fulfilment of duties)

Hours:  In addition to standard office hours, there is often a requirement for regular networking with our members and other key stakeholders

Leave:  25 days increasing to 30 after 5 years service

Job Description

Purpose of Job:

The Chief Executive will provide inspirational, modern leadership to the Chartered Institute, shaping strategic plans for growth and development and ensuring these are turned into operational reality and maximum impact across the four nations. To lead a modern organisation with a wide reach in a digital age.

Key Accountabilities:

  • To embrace and deliver the vision of the Chartered Institute in partnership with both the Board and the senior leadership team to ensure the success, financial viability, growth, and sustainability of the organisation.
  • To provide focus and clarity to develop and deliver a new strategy for the Chartered Institute.
  • To continue to embed equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of our work, both in relation to our own staff and volunteer team, and in relation to supporting the profession to become more equal, diverse and inclusive through our Change Collective strategy.
  • To play a key role in income generation and diversification for the benefit of individual, organisation and corporate members through the development of strong relationships with existing and new high value organisational members and corporate supporter and sponsors.
  • To enable a blended approach to product and service development, creating a digitally-confident organisation able to reach and respond to a wider audience more effectively.
  • To form a strong, effective and open working relationship with the Chair and the Board of Trustees.
  • To manage the organisation, provide strategic direction and lead change and evolution in partnership with the Board and working through empowerment and direction of the senior leadership team.
  • To promote effective performance management and staff development culture in the organisation, creating a high-performing and delivery-focused organisation.
  • To grow all aspects of the Chartered Institute as the membership body for fundraisers and fundraising organisations in the UK, and to develop the support and benefits that members need to optimise fundraising in the delivery of their organisational objectives.
  • To champion the professional development of members and establish clear and relevant career pathways within the profession.
  • To represent the Chartered Institute to a wide range of key external stakeholders including governments around the UK and key sector partners, building effective working relationships with key influencers.
  • To ensure sound financial development and management of the Chartered Institute, with strong business planning and delivery processes to ensure that our financial strategy underpins and supports the organisational strategy.
  • To embed effective relationships with all of our volunteer Groups around the UK at the heart of our work, providing a clear strategic framework for their contribution and efficient support for their volunteering
  • To ensure excellent fundraising standards around the UK, working closely with the Fundraising Regulator, Scottish Fundraising Standards Panel, the Charity Commission both in NI and England and Wales, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator and our own Standards Advisory Board.
  • To provide strong leadership for the fundraising community within the sector, in particular seeking to deliver our vision through collaborative working with other umbrella bodies.
  • To be a key national spokesperson for the fundraising profession in the media, with Government Ministers, senior civil servants, funders, the national and sector media and other external agencies.
  • To ensure that all duties under the Companies Act, Charity Commission requirements, and all other legal obligations are fulfilled.
