The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate their knowledge and experience in the following areas:

  • A proven strategic and operational leader. Able to work collaboratively, take collective responsibility, make decisive strategic decisions (including the tough call when needed) and take calculated risks to display their leadership ability.
  • An effective role model, able to inspire and motivate, delegate and empower, communicate strategic decisions and provide a clear implementation roadmap, encouraging independent thought and diversity of ideas.
  • Proven senior leadership experience, and demonstrable ability to develop and deliver vision and strategy.
  • The ability to think and act strategically to develop practical, innovative and creative solutions to strategic issues and complex problems. Analytical and able to interpret complex data and information to inform decision making. Able to make unexpected connections and identify points of maximum leverage for action.
  • A generous leader and collaborator who is comfortable taking a ‘servant leader’ approach, building on the ideas and contributions of peers and supporting collective decision making. The skills to engage and take people with you on pan- BFI projects, building trust and openness with like previous demonstrable experience.

  • A proven track record of effective strategic stakeholder management with the ability to negotiate and influence effectively, including experience of working with non-executive Board members, Government and key external stakeholders in a publically accountable and transparent environment.
  • Senior experience in managing archives, libraries, museum collections or related area, with a knowledge of modern collections management practices and an appreciation of the application of these to film, video, digital formats and paper collections.
  • Understanding of current professional issues and practice with a commitment to continuing professional development, developing professional standards, and a demonstrable knowledge of collections regulatory and ethical environments.
  • A proven track record of a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion and centering this within all responsibilities and activities.
  • Demonstrable and extensive knowledge of the history of film, television and the moving image, and an understanding of film and television archival practices, including both their place in the industry and the role they play in the development and understanding of the moving image and its impact on society.
  • Working knowledge of broader digital screen media – including immersive media and videogames – and their potential as storytelling devices.
  • A commitment to the principles and techniques of continuous improvement, and the drive to introduce a rigorous approach to reviewing progress and performance and to raising standards.
