Person Specification - Diocesan Secretary

The appointee will be someone who:

  • has a personal commitment to organisational excellence, displaying honesty and integrity.
  • possesses and exhibits a very particular kind of resilience, and calmness under pressure, and is a passionate realist.
  • commands respect from staff, clergy and laity in parishes and in the wider world by providing clear leadership.
  • has an ability to comprehend, communicate and act upon complex financial information accurately with a range of people, both internally and externally.
  • is committed to, and enthusiastic for, the purpose and culture of the Church of England and the Diocese of St Albans, in serving generously our local communities at the parish level and enabling Christians there to be prayerful, generous and visible.
  • has the confidence to engage with difficult challenges faced by the diocese, and a determination to resolve them.
  • has considerable experience of managing and communicating change with skill, patience and sensitivity.
  • has experience, and understanding, of working with, and managing, an organisation comprising both paid and volunteer co-workers – a small number of professional administrative colleagues, a large body of professional clergy, and lay volunteers in the parishes.
  • is a strategic manager and thinker with an inclusive, collaborative management style.
  • will take a lead in communicating the Diocese’s commitment to Living God’s Love.

Qualifications and experience

  • a proven track record at executive or senior management level from within the public, private or charitable sector.
  • a business / management or other relevant degree/ qualification.
  • an understanding of the current issues facing parishes in the Church of England and of the role which dioceses can play in support of them.
  • a person sympathetic to the mission of the diocese and of the aims of the Church of England.
  • the ability to travel, particularly within the diocesan area.
