Director of Borders, Visitors, and International Migration

It is essential that in your written application you give evidence, using examples, of proven experience in each of the essential criteria of the person specification. These responses will be developed and discussed with candidates invited for interview.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate their knowledge, experience, capability and behavioural approach to a high standard against the following key criteria:

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of leading and managing policy and strategy teams responsible for a complex agenda, with the political nous to understand the needs of Ministers and stakeholders;
  • Demonstrable experience in a whole-system approach to policy development and systems leadership;
  • Experience of gathering and using evidence to inform the development of policy and evaluate its impact;
  • An exceptional leader with a track record of leading and managing diverse and virtual teams, you will have proven ability to set a strong direction; convey a persuasive future vision at all levels of an organisation; encourage and motivate teams; drive high performance and develop, attract and retain talent; and prioritise diversity and inclusion in line with Home Office values;
  • A strong influencer, collegiate in approach and able to forge effective strategic partnerships, with the ability to communicate with conviction and clarity in the face of tough negotiations or challenges;
  • The vision and drive to fom up the new directorate, contribute to the development of the new Mission and win the confidence of Ministers whilst building strong networks of influence across the Department, Government, internationally and with NGOs;
  • Strong personal resilience to cope with pace, uncertainty, resistance, political direction, complexity and competing interests.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of negotiations, international relations and diplomacy, and/or border authority.
