Role Description - Chief Executive Officer

Overall purpose of the role:

The purpose of this role is to provide leadership and direction for Magic Breakfast (“MB”) and to ensure the effective and proper operation of the organisation as the senior executive officer. The Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) will work closely with the Senior Management Team (“SMT”) and the Board of Trustees (“the Board”), reporting to the Chair, to develop and implement strategies in support of Magic Breakfast’s vision – “no child too hungry to learn.”  MB is on the precipice of significant growth and opportunity and is looking for a visionary leader to navigate this next phase of our journey and ensure our future success.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy, Planning and Performance Management

  • Lead the development and implementation of strategic plans, objectives and financial targets to meet both short and long-term organisational aspirations.
  • Ensure the financial probity of the organisation and provide this assurance to the Board.
  • Conduct regular risk management reviews and put in place mitigating actions.
  • Take overall responsibility for performance management against targets in all areas of the charity’s operations.

Income Generation & Commercial Agreements

  • Ensure an effective income generation strategy is in place, to provide sufficient funding for MB’s operations and to secure its long-term financial viability.
  • Play an active role in the delivery of MB’s multimillion pound fundraising campaign. Work with the Head of Fundraising to build engaged and active relationships with high level donors and partners.

Leadership

  • Provide leadership for the SMT, building a high performing, collaborative and engaged team for the delivery of MB’s goals and vision.
  • Uphold and promote the values of MB and foster an inclusive culture that attracts, retains and motivates staff to perform and deliver the organisation’s goals.
  • Establish and implement a people strategy and supporting systems to achieve the organisation’s objectives including safeguarding.

Board & Governance

  • Ensure the Board can operate effectively and make informed decisions through the provision of timely, accurate and up to date information on relevant issues.
  • Report regularly to the Board on performance against goals and the business plan, together with any other matters which are relevant to the discharge of the Board’s responsibilities.
  • Foster a productive and open relationship with the Board, especially the Chair.
  • Ensure MB complies with all legal and regulatory standards of a company limited by guarantee and by the requirements of the Charities Commission.

External Relationships & Communication

  • Be the chief ambassador and spokesperson for MB, including with media, donors and other stakeholders, presenting professional and compelling messages aligned with MB’s vision and reinforcing that we are the authority on child morning hunger.
  • With other team members, foster productive relationships with government, politicians, think tanks, education providers, local authorities and other policy makers to advocate and influence funding, policy and legislative decisions in support of our vision. Ensure MB is seen as the authority on child morning classroom hunger and has a seat at the table of key forums on policy and funding.
  • With other team members, develop strong, effective relationships with the schools we support.
