Person Specification

It is essential that in your written application you give evidence, using examples, of proven experience in each of the essential criteria of the person specification. These responses will be developed and discussed with candidates invited for interview.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate their knowledge, experience, capability and behavioural approach to a high standard against the following key criteria:

Essential Criteria

• A successful track record of working as part of a senior management team of a large organisation, with direct and considerable experience of: effective business planning; analysis; budget management; leading and motivating diverse teams (developing a spirit of teamwork across functional and organisational boundaries), and; performance appraisal.

• A broad corporate outlook, ability to collaboratively develop a strategic vision, enthusiasm for transformation and commitment to a shared mission, coupled with the ability to drive forward efficiency savings across a large organisation, in line with key strategic objectives.

• Deep expertise within a relevant scientific, research or engineering discipline/field, with a broad conception of scientific relevance.

• Significant knowledge and understanding of the evolving scientific and technology landscape, including an appreciation of data science and its application.

• Strong professional standing and personal credibility within your discipline/field, with a demonstrable ability to represent the Home Office to the broader scientific/academic community

• Demonstrable commercial acumen, ideally with experience of commissioning and procurement.

• Experience in the oversight or direct leadership of major projects and programmes.

• Experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders within a highly complex environment both internally and externally in different ways and different styles.

• Experience of influencing management at board level with strong analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to communicate complex positions clearly and compellingly.

• The flexibility and personal resilience to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances in an environment of regular scrutiny by the media, public and others and to cope well under pressure.

• Post-graduate or equivalent academic expertise in a relevant domain.
