Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Community and Emergency Response role at the Coal Authority. We’re a practical and operational organisation who operate 24/7 incident and emergency response to protect and support the communities we serve from the impacts of past mining.

You’ll be joining us at an exciting and important time. Over its 27 year history the organisation has proven its ability to respond to emergency situations, solve complex problems, provide expertise to support partners and use our information to help people make informed decisions. Our work protects lives, drinking water and the environment and we also seek to grow, learn and be innovative so that we don’t just respond to the challenges of mining legacy but also seek creative benefits such as using warm mine-water to provide low carbon heating for homes and businesses. We aspire to be net-zero carbon by 2030 and alongside technology and innovation we will do this by maximising habitats and nature resilience at our sites and providing access to nature and green space.

We see the impacts of climate change and more extreme weather on our work and this is leading to increasing recognition of the role we can play in supporting local resilience forums and emergency partners in a wide range of major incidents as well as incidents, such as subsidence or mine gas where we are the lead. We have a wide range of technical expertise and skills but a key aspect of our work is to support the customers and communities we work with, to warn and inform as necessary and to provide essential engagement.

We couldn’t do any of this without our great people. We invest in learning and development and have a clear focus on flexibility, wellbeing and diversity inclusion – including taking practical steps to become a more actively anti-racist organisation. In joining our leadership team you will help inspire the organisation to be a truly great place to work for everyone.

This is a new role which will take responsibility for a mix of existing and new teams as part of the Coal Authority’s commitment to continuous improvement, community engagement and being a modern 24/7 emergency response organisation. Detailed executive portfolios change over time depending on need and our leadership team works closely together to ensure that we deliver as ‘One Coal Authority’ so we are looking for someone who can be flexible and enjoys working collaboratively. We want someone who has a passion for customer and community engagement – ideally with operational understanding and experience.

Relevant experience with a positive attitude and commitment to the role and organisation is more important than length of experience or particular skill sets. We’d prefer to focus on what you could bring to the role, the organisation and our customers so if you’re interested or excited by what you’ve seen so far then do express your interest and have a conversation.

I can’t wait to meet you.

Lisa Pinney MBE
