Welcome

Thank you for your interest in joining Scope, the charity focused on equality for disabled people.  As Chair, I’m really pleased that you are joining us.

I’m proud to work with a group of very talented individuals that form Scope’s Board and to support a dynamic and experienced Executive Leadership Team, plus the broader team at Scope.

There are 14 million disabled people in the UK – that’s one in five of us.

In 2017, we took the decision to stop running regulated services including social care and schools.  This critical step enabled us to channel our resources and energy into bringing fairness, justice and equality to disabled people in Britain.

We are two and a half years into our ambitious  five-year strategy, ‘Everyday Equality’ and we have made some really significant progress. However, the task ahead is a big one so the drive and dynamism of the board holds the key to lead and to inspire.

In the broad terms of how Scope is developing, we will:

  • harness digital technology to help us reach many more disabled people.
  • work with government, businesses and partner organisations to influence attitudes, policies and behaviour on the biggest possible scale.
  • measure our impact and be accountable for the difference we make.
  • gather critical new evidence about disabled people’s lives, which will help us deliver activities and campaigns with real impact.
  • put disabled people at the heart of everything we do.
  • Drive through Diversity, Equity and inclusion across the whole Scope organisation from the board itself, along the organisation and out to our 4,000 volunteers, to better reflect the society we strive to encourage, affirm and support.

Among trustees, we seek to offer Scope a broad range of professional expertise from different sectors to support the work and we are always looking to bring in different perspectives and areas of expertise, that will complement and strengthen our existing skill set and experience.

More than anything else, we want to increase diversity, challenge and dynamism to the way the charity is seen from the outside, to give us the authority of truly representing the people we serve.

Within this pack and in conversation with Green Park, you will learn more about our work, the diverse range of people that we support and the sort of experience, talent  and knowledge we are keen to have in our new trustees .

It’s an incredibly exciting time to join Scope. We have new challenges to tackle and ambitious plans to help many more people with our products, services and campaigns.

If you’re keen to make a real, positive difference for disabled people across the UK then you’re in the right place. We are actively encouraging committed people with relevant experience who want to make a difference, from any background, to engage with us and get in touch.

I wish you all the best with your application and hope to see you soon.

With very best wishes,

Robin Millar, Chair
