Role Description - Director of Income

Salary: circa £80,000 (full time based). This job offers an option either full-time or to work a 4-day working week (pro-rata c£80,000)
Location: Battersea

The job purpose is:

  1. To lead on income sustainability and growth for BookTrust (BookTrust current income is c£10m pa with an ambition to grow significantly over the next five years)
    • Development and delivery of BookTrust overall income strategy
    • Direct accountability for delivery and growth of income in fundraising /primary purpose trading
    • Support leadership team and wider organisation to deliver and grow other income streams (across government grants, contracts) – currently c£7m pa.
  1. To lead our communications, marketing and digital teams and strategies to deliver our new five-year strategy on an organisation-wide basis.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Development and delivery of BookTrust overall income strategy
  • Lead on the development, planning and delivery of BookTrust overall income strategy – currently c£10m pa with an ambition to grow significantly over the next five years
  • Review and then develop income growth across the full range of potential opportunity areas including individual giving, primary purpose trading, national and local government funding, trusts and foundations, publishers, other corporate funders, research funding, high and medium net worth givers
  1. Direct accountability for growth and delivery of specific income streams (fundraising / elements of primary purpose trading –currently c£3m pa in total)
  • Develop and be accountable for existing individual fundraising streams (Friends regular giving scheme and fundraising campaigns)
  • Develop and be accountable for existing primary purpose trading income
  • Develop and be accountable for existing other fundraising streams (Trusts and Foundations, corporates)
  • Accountable for all relevant fundraising regulatory, compliance and financial management
  1. Support leadership team and wider organisation to deliver and grow other income streams (across government grants, contracts)
  • Support maintenance and growth of national government funding led by other members of the leadership team – Arts Council of England, Welsh govement, Northern Ireland government (currently £7m pa)
  • Lead and develop our bid and grant writing functions
  • Lead on developing BookTrust offers into fundable propositions
  • Identify and build income generation skills across BT staff
  1. To lead our communications, marketing and digital teams and strategies to deliver our new five-year strategy on an organisation-wide basis.
    1. To be accountable for BookTrust’s communications and campaigns strategy, activities and team
    2. To be accountable for appropriate marketing/ brand strategies, activities and team to support BookTrust’s work in the delivery of our interventions, for profile and stakeholder engagement and for income generation (via marketing of primary purpose trading and in support of fundraising and other income generation)
    3. To act as the media spokesperson for BookTrust as needed
    4. To ensure that BookTrust digital activities and team support the range of organisational needs (including communications income generation and profile)
  1. General responsibilities
    1. Financial Management
    • To lead on the development of robust financial plans for income to deliver the BookTrust strategy (and where needed the case for investment)
    • To be overall accountable for budgets and contracts across the directorate and that spend is well managed, delivers high performance and value for money and meets BookTrust internal controls and processes
    1. People Management
    • To effectively lead, motivate and develop a high-performing directorate staff team
    • To carry out regular support and management sessions, and annual appraisals with all direct reports
    • To be accountable for the induction and performance management of the directorate
    • To hold regular team meetings, updating on all matters from SLT, other teams/forums etc as appropriate
    1. General Duties
    • To play an active role in the leadership and management of BookTrust as a member of the Senior Leadership Team
    • To play an active role in the development of BookTrust business planning and strategy as a member of the Senior Leadership Team
    • To work closely with Trustees as needed, and support the Board and other Committees as needed – (especially the Fundraising and Income Generation Lead Trustee, and the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee)
    • To provide regular progress reports to the CEO and Board
    • To be committed to personal development
    • To carry out all duties in line with BookTrust policies and procedures and being prepared to undertake additional reasonable duties, as required
    • To promote BookTrust and its vision and values in all activities, both internally while carrying out duties and externally, with stakeholders and the general public

The post holder will report to the Chief Executive. 

The post holder is responsible for: team of 20 in total

  • Heads of Fundraising and team (5)
  • Head of Marketing and team (4)
  • Head of Communications and Campaigns, and team (4)
  • Head of Digital and team (7)

Circumstances

  • Full-time or four days per week role (pro-rata)
  • The post will be based in our offices in Battersea, London expected to be circa two to three days a week – though BookTrust is currently fully home-working
  • There may be a requirement for occasional evening or weekend work consistent with the seniority of the position
  • The postholder will be expected to carry out all duties in line with BookTrust policies and procedures and be prepared to undertake additional reasonable duties, as required
