BookTrust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity. We know that children who read are happier, healthier, more empathetic, and more creative. They also do better at school. Our aim at BookTrust is getting every child reading – regularly and by choice. We get children reading in lots of different ways. We have significant focus on the early years because we’ve learnt that starting early and involving the whole family is a great way to get children reading. Our work is based around our theory of change. Key features of our behaviour change approach include: starting early, being able to access books, giving children a choice of books, a reading environment that feels safe and secure, the right stage and age for each child , supporting parents and carers, and making sure that children can see themselves in books. To achieve this we run nationwide programmes – like our flagship programme Bookstart, and we also work with schools to support teachers and school librarians to get children and young people excited about books and reading.
