BookTrust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity. We know that children who read are happier, healthier, more empathetic, and more creative. They also do better at school.  Our aim at BookTrust is getting every child reading – regularly and by choice.  With the long-term impact of the pandemic on children’s lives, and with an ever-widening gap for the most disadvantaged children, our work has never been more important. We have a new ambitious five-year strategy with a deep commitment to doing ever more to support children and families from disadvantaged backgrounds in reading.

We deliver our mission through evidence-based interventions that reach over 3 million children and families each year from 0-13 with a strong focus on the early years. We work with a network of skilled delivery partners; with every local authority across England and Wales, health visitors, schools, libraries, social workers and early years workers; an incredible and increasingly diverse community of children’s authors and illustrators; and with committed and expert support from publishers.

As part of our new strategy we aim to grow our income significantly over the next five years. (Our current income is c£10m pa). We have strong and realistic foundations for this aim with a secure base of income from long term committed funders including the Arts Council of England, the Welsh and Northern Ireland governments, Foundation supporters and a thriving individual giving scheme and Christmas giving campaign – both developed over the last three years.

Our new Director of Income is a key role in BookTrust and in our leadership team to take forward our ambitions. You will be experienced in delivering and growing income – able to take a strategic view of potential opportunities and then deliver on this strategy. You will be a strong leader with energy and drive; able to make change and lead across the full range of the directorate’s areas (fundraising, communications, marketing and digital functions) so that all continue to deliver expertly for the organisation. You will be comfortable and experienced with working with funders and donors at the most senior level, and representing BookTrust. And you will be excited by BookTrust’s existing varied income streams (fundraising, government funders, primary purpose training) and our deep network of relationships that you can build on.

Your will have a deeply collaborative approach and be keen to work alongside expert colleagues in our leadership team where income generation is a cross-organisation activity; confident of your ability to influence as well as direct. You will be mission aware and passionate about raising income in support of our strategy.  Working in an 80 person organisation which leverages our partners to work at national scale, you will be comfortable about strategic thinking and being hands on in the detail when needed. You will be confident about your skills to nurture and develop a great team with a range of expert skills.

In return we can offer you a vital cause, an organisation with firm income foundations and relationships,  a commitment to invest for the future, an  open friendly workplace with expert colleagues and an opportunity to make a real difference. We are also genuinely family friendly.

BookTrust is going places and what we do has never mattered more. If you have the skills, experience and drive to work as a key leader in our great team – we would love to talk to you.
